The junction town of the south, where the road over the Atlas meets the routes to the Draa Valley, the gorges and the Sahara. Our home base, and the natural starting point for anything in the region.
Where everything meets
Ouarzazate sits at 1,160 metres where three routes converge: north over the Tizi n'Tichka to Marrakech, south down the Draa Valley to Zagora, and east along the kasbah road to the Dades, Todra and Merzouga. That position is the reason the town exists, and the reason nearly every southern itinerary passes through it.
Taourirt Kasbah
The Glaoui kasbah on the eastern edge of town is the main monument: a warren of rooms, courtyards and staircases in packed earth, partly restored with UNESCO support. The painted ceilings and carved plaster in the reception rooms show what Telouet must have looked like intact.
The film industry
Atlas Studios and CLA Studios sit on the edge of town and are among the largest film facilities in the world by area. Standing sets from productions shot here can be visited, and the local economy has been shaped by the industry since the 1980s. The Museum of Cinema faces the Taourirt Kasbah.
Around the town
The Fint Oasis, a green cut in bare rock half an hour south, is a good short trip. The Noor complex west of town is one of the world's largest concentrated solar power plants. East, the Skoura palm grove and the Amridil Kasbah begin the road of a thousand kasbahs.
