Aït Ben Haddou
A fortified village of packed earth rising in tiers above the Ounila river, listed by UNESCO in 1987 and the most recognisable kasbah in Morocco after decades of film work.
Why it matters
Aït Ben Haddou is a ksar — a fortified collective village — on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. What survives is a dense cluster of earthen houses and towers climbing to a granary at the summit, enclosed by defensive walls. It is the best-preserved example of the pre-Saharan earthen architecture that once lined this whole route, which is why UNESCO listed it.
Visiting
You cross the Ounila riverbed on stepping stones or a footbridge and climb through the lanes; several houses are open and a handful of families still live inside. The climb to the agadir at the top takes about twenty minutes and the view over the valley is the reason to do it. Allow ninety minutes, or longer with a local guide, who can be hired at the entrance.
On film
Lawrence of Arabia, The Man Who Would Be King, The Living Daylights, The Last Temptation of Christ, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Prince of Persia and Game of Thrones have all shot here. Some structures you see are film sets rather than original architecture — a distinction worth knowing while you walk.
Combining it
The natural pairing is Telouet, the Glaoui palace on the far side of the mountains, reached by the old Ounila Valley road rather than the modern pass. That road runs through red gorges and cliffside villages and is one of the finest drives in the region. Aït Ben Haddou is also the standard first stop on every desert tour heading east.
