Todra Gorge
A limestone canyon where the Todra river has cut 300 metres down and the walls close to about ten metres apart. One of the great rock-climbing venues in North Africa, and spectacular even from the road.
The narrows
The gorge is most dramatic in its first kilometre, where the road and the river share a floor barely ten metres wide between vertical walls. The light only reaches the bottom in the middle of the day, and the temperature drops noticeably as you walk in. Beyond the narrows the valley opens and a track continues north towards the high plateau.
Climbing
Todra has been a climbing destination since the 1970s and now has over four hundred bolted routes on solid limestone, from single pitches to long multi-pitch lines. Spring and autumn are the seasons; summer is too hot on the sunny walls and winter mornings are cold in the shade.
The Tinghir oasis
Below the gorge, the Todra river feeds a palm grove that runs for kilometres along the valley. The irrigation channels dividing it are centuries old and still communally managed. Walking through the oasis between the old villages and the new town is a good half-day and shows how the water system actually works.
