Itinerary
Morning departure from your accommodation in Marrakech at 8 AM, your driver/guide will pick up you to start an adventure tour through the high atlas Mountains crossin the Pass of Tichka the highest road in all africa, after many stops for a breathtaking photos, we will reach the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, where your guide will share the fascinating history of Aït Benhaddou which once served as the former caravan route between the Saharaand Marrakech in present-day Morocco. Most of the town’s inhabitants now live in a more modern village at the other side of the river; ten families however still live within the ksar. Aït Benhaddou was once a significant stop for traders carrying gold, salt and slaves along the famous Southern Caravan route moving through the Sahara. Only six miles away, is the village of Tamdaght, dominated by the canyon walls of a Glaoui Kasbah. The Kasbah is famous and you will find its towers inhabited by storks. Walk outside the Kasbah’s lush terraced gardens and witness the same desert scenery that used in Gladiatorand Alexander the Great.
After lunch we will continue to reach our final destination being Dades Gorges, the route ahead, often referred to as “the road of one thousand kasbahs” will be full of exciting scenery. At Skoura we will admire its impressive palm groves and ruined kasbahs surrounded by palm trees, fig, birch and tamarisk. We will also pass El–KelaaM’Gnoua and surrounding valleys, open up your window to inhale the strong scent of Persian roses permeating through the mountain air. In spring we can make a pit-stop to take pictures of the spectacular landscape overlooking El-Kelaa M’Gnoua whose two distillation factories use 3000 to 4000 of the rose petals produced by the town each year. Continue to reach the dades Gorges where you will spend the night in Kasbah or Hotel.
After breakfast at your hotel, our 4 days desert tour will continue to Merzouga, passing the Todra river, oases of impressive kasbahs, valleys lined with date palms, olive terraces, pomegranate and almond and fruit trees. Back on the main road, look for signs for Er-Rachidia. Here the palm groves of the Ziz and Tafilalt begin and you can catch a glimpse of the Er-Rachidia’s administrative and military center built by the French in the early twentieth century.
► Other sights to look for include lovely stretches over the fertile Todra Gorgeand a dramatic backdrop of rocks framing the slender towers of the Tamnalt Kasbahs.
►Stop in Rissani for lunch and try Madfouna, southern Morocco’s version of pizza: griddle- fried wheat flour bases topped with onions, tomatoes, olives, minced lamb and cheese.
► Overnight in a Luxury Desert Camp in Merzouga in the heart of the Erg Chebbi Dunes.
